Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Director of Venue Operations, and working in collaboration, the Assistant Director of Venue Operations supports the overall leadership and management of all aspects of engineering, maintenance, management and operational functions at the MBCC and its Campus. This position ensures building systems operate at peak performance, remain event-ready, and internal teams and contract partners deliver exceptional customer service and venue management. The role leads a comprehensive preventive maintenance program, capital projects, sustainability initiatives, and event-related venue operations.

 

The Assistant Director of Venue Operations collaborates closely with the MBCC OVG internal departments MBCC contract partners (F&B, AV-Rigging-Digital, Internet Services, Electrical), and external contract partners to ensure optimal performance, regulatory compliance, safety, and client & attendee satisfaction.

 

This role pays an annual salary of $95,000-$110,000

About the Venue

The award-winning Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) welcomes meeting and event planners, exhibitors and attendees to Miami Beach and Miami. Reimagined following a $640-million-dollar renovation, the MBCC provides a world-class, state-of-the-art event venue for exceptional conferences, conventions, tradeshows, and meetings. The new 800-room, connected Grand Hyatt Miami Beach, is under development and slated to open in late 2027.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contract Management

  • In collaboration with the Director of Venue Operations, support the management, operations and maintenance of all contracts and agreements that fall within the Venue Operations scope, including but not limited to the preparation of contract abstracts and the negotiation of new or existing agreements. 

Venue Operations

  • Oversee daily operations and long-term planning of all engineering systems, including HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and life safety.
  • Supervise a multi-trade team including electricians, mechanical, HVAC techs, plumbers, carpenters, painters, locksmiths, Venue Technician/Helper and other operations trades.
  • Conduct interview, schedule, train, develop, coach and counsel, provide open communications, make recommendations to performance reviews through HR systems such as Lattice.
  • Prioritize service requests and projects; schedule and monitor the service performed.
  • Develop, implement and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), policies, procedures and best practices for the MBCC Campus, property, equipment, tools, grounds and other assets are properly maintained.
  • Conduct routine inspections and ensure systems meet safety, sustainability, and operational benchmarks.
  • Work Planning and Coordination: Plan, direct, manage and coordinate the work plan for venue maintenance operations, ensuring that Corrigo is integrated into the workflow for effective monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Assign and review work activities, projects, and programs; meet with staff to resolve issues and monitor work progress.
  •  Evaluate work methods, procedures, and outcomes to maintain optimal venue operations.
  • Working knowledge of the MBCC Event Planning Guides.
  • Respond promptly to venue-related service requests and emergencies with a customer-first mindset.
  • Test and examine the life safety systems to ensure they are 100% operational at all times to protect the asset, attendees, employees, venue, and contract partners.
  • Research and secure services and equipment/parts, review purchase requests for department and monitor expenses to ensure budgeted goals are met/exceeded.
  • Assist in the administration of the department by preparing and maintaining logs, records or other documentation to ensure a smooth operation and minimize liabilities.
  • Collaborate with other departments to facilitate seamless projects and or event execution.
  • Implement safety protocols and best practices in all aspects of operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Capital Projects & Asset Management

  • In collaboration with the Director of Venue Operations, assist with project management of capital improvements, renovations, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors from design through completion.
  • Maintain accurate venue documentation, records, and inventory. E.g. as-builts

Event Support & Venue Readiness

  • Participate in Event Services related meetings which impact the MBCC Campus operation.
  • Collaborate with Event Services to ensure venue infrastructure supports all event requirements and coordination for event-specific HVAC, electrical, and mechanical needs.
  • Serve as operational liaison for events, ensuring readiness and quick resolution of on-site issues.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with city, local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain and enforce hazardous materials communication and material safety data compliance.
  • Oversee safety protocols for MBCC Campus infrastructure of fire protection systems and emergency power.

Budgeting & Financial Management

  • Assist in developing and managing the department's annual budget.
  • Monitor expenditures, prepare forecasts, and recommend cost-saving and or revenue initiatives.
  • Review and order supply/equipment and contractor services.
  • Working knowledge of financial management systems (budget, accounting, work orders, purchase orders, procurement, inventory management)

Sustainability & Energy Management

  • Monitor and analyze utility consumption; recommend energy-saving solutions.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a robust energy management plan/system.
  • Support MBCC and City-led sustainability programs and resiliency efforts.
  • Participate in MBCC's Sustainability Committee.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Adhere and manage the collective bargaining agreement in place with IBEW union. Collaborate with the Human Resources Director to manage any collective bargaining agreement related topics.
  • Foster a culture of developmental trade skills, customer service and venue excellence, safety, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across departments and contribute to leadership and safety committees.
  • Actively participate in internal/ external networking opportunities and or industry associations/certifications (E.g. IAVM, IFMA, EIC, etc.)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • OSHA Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with OSHA safety requirements, ensuring proper safety protocols in the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, including chiller units.
  • Strong experience in the Convention Center/Hotel industry or similar building, campuses and facilities.
  • Comprehensive Commercial HVAC Understanding: Demonstrated expertise in maintaining and repairing a wide range of HVAC systems, with a specific focus on commercial environments
  • Comprehensive understanding of building management/ life safety and preventive maintenance systems.
  • Chiller System Proficiency: Strong background in the operation, repair, and maintenance of water-cooled and air-cooled chiller systems, ensuring optimal performance, energy efficiency, and system longevity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Venue Management, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5 to 8 years of progressive experience in engineering or venue operations in a convention center, stadium, arena, or hospitality venue.
  • Minimum 5 years in a supervisory or management role leading trades personnel.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Trade certifications in HVAC, electrical, plumbing or mechanical systems highly preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
  • Project Management Certification highly preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Highest level of integrity and transparency and strong commitment to excellence in customer service and venue management.
  • Must be able to understand and evaluate complex information, data, etc. from various sources to meet appropriate objectives.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Strong understanding of systems such as BMS, preventative maintenance, life safety, fire protection, and energy management.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and building automation tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining high standards.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
  • Union environment experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to navigate ladders, catwalks, and confined mechanical spaces.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Travel related to company business is sometimes required.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Noise levels may range from moderate to loud.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • The work schedule of this position typically involves a 5-day work week Monday through Friday; however, this will fluctuate based upon the needs of the community, a project and/or events. Must have the ability to remain available 7 days per week, work long and irregular hours that may vary due to functions and may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. This role may also require overnight shifts based on the needs of the venue or in the event of a life safety emergency.
