Position Summary

The Operations Manager reports to the Director of Operations and is responsible for assisting in the administration, planning, and direction for the operations of the Pan American Center, including front and back of house services, technical services, information technology conversion, and equipment inventory control. Ensures an effective and cost-efficient program by controlling the operations budget and performing related day-to-day responsibilities as required.

 

We anticipate that this is a non-permanent position which will end no later than May 31, 2026. 

 

 

This role pays an annual salary of $43,888-$46,000

About the Venue

Pan American Center is a multi-purpose arena in Las Cruces, New Mexico, located on the campus of New Mexico State University. The arena has a current seating capacity of 12,515 people. the arena serves as home of the New Mexico State Aggies Men's and Women's Basketball and Women's Volleyball Teams.

Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Oversee the operation of all event changeovers, including basketball floor, stage builds, chair sets, and barricade set up, and assist with audio/visual services.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for all event changeovers; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Assists in the overall daily operation and maintenance of the facilities.
  • Inspect work areas to ensure standards are met and address any deficiencies.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Operations and the Sr. Event Manager, and all other departments to address specific requirements and resolve any operational issues.
  • Manage subordinate supervisors who oversee employees in various functions. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Implement and train employees in the operating procedures, preventive maintenance schedules, emergency plans, and safety/risk management policies that conform to corporate standards.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings. Develop and maintain a harmonious working relationship with all of the other departments. 
  • Oversee the takedown process and ensure all equipment is stored correctly and the venue is returned to its original condition.
  • Inspect complete setups to ensure they meet the required standards and clients’ specifications.
  • Ensure all equipment, such as tables, chairs, staging, pipe, and drape, is set up according to the event plan.
  • Monitor event spaces before, during, and after to ensure everything functions correctly and promptly address any issues.
  • Coordinate labor hours for staff.
  • Receives and responds to requests from tenants or refers them to the Director of Operations.
  • Be available for event support.
  • Performs routine to moderate tasks, maintaining chairs, staging, risers, bike rack, barricades, and other inventory as needed.
  • Inspect work areas to ensure standards are met and address any deficiencies.
  • Coordinate with event managers and other departments to address specific requirements and resolve operational issues.
  • Proactively use all safety mandates and teach others safety protocols.
  • Select, train, motivate, and evaluate staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
  • Plan, budget, and schedule facility modifications, including cost estimates, bid sheets, layouts and contracts for construction and conversions.
  • Rotate with other facility personnel to function as Manager on Duty (MOD).
  • Operate equipment such as tugs, forklifts, and pallet jacks.
  • Perform strenuous physical duties at times, including lifting, carrying, moving, walking extensively throughout the building, working from various heights, and around moderate to loud noises.
  • Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • Interacts with other facility staff in a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner.
  • Other duties assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory skills and experience
  • Ability to effectively be available via a company provided cell phone, email, text
  • Ability to effectively lead a large team in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Meet the physical demands of this job, which include being able to get in and around the facility (requires personal mobility), lifting, carrying, moving, climbing, working from various heights, and moderate to loud noises.
  • Forklift certification or ability to acquire within 30 days of employment
  • Operate a personal computer using Windows and Microsoft Office software.
  • Operate standard office equipment including copier and fax machine.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form.
  • Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements
  • Capable of working nights, weekends and holidays, as well extended hours when needed
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, professionally in person and in writing
  • Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule and produce accurate results.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with clients, employees, exhibitors, patrons and others encountered in the course of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s license preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur.
  • Bachelor’s/Technical degree from and accredited college/university/School preferred
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in supervision of others/work crews required
