Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant General Manager,  this position manages and coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, including engineering, maintenance, set-ups/changeovers, custodial, and groundskeeping. The Assistant Director of Operations provides administrative planning and direction to the full-time Operations staff to maintain the highest quality service to ensure client satisfaction. This position provides overall department management assistance to the Assistant General Manager.

This role pays an annual salary of $80,000-$85,000 and is bonus eligible.

About the Venue

A state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility, the Thomas M. Ryan Center, located on the University of Rhode Island campus in scenic South County, opened its doors in June 2002. Home to URI Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs, the Ryan Center also features the URI football teams' locker room, along with athletic department offices, training rooms, players' lounges and a souvenir store. The venue seats 8,000 for basketball, and over 6,300 for concerts, family shows, lectures and other community events.The Ryan Center was designed and built to meet all ADA specifications to accommodate our guests with disabilities. Located in Kingston, the Center draws on an audience of over 1.4 million people within a 40-mile radius.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and review the work plan for the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena operations; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of all electrical systems and equipment within the venue.
  • This includes ensuring electrical infrastructure is event-ready, maintaining safety standards, and responding quickly to technical needs during events.
  • Ensure all electrical systems are compliant with local, state, and national codes.
  • Support event power needs, including show power, temporary electrical drops, and generator hookups.
  • Assist with lighting control systems, including architectural, theatrical, and exterior lighting.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of all electrical infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with event staff, promoters, contractors, and vendors to understand power needs and ensure proper setup.
  • Maintain accurate logs of inspections, maintenance, repairs, and installations.
  • Assist in planning and implementing capital upgrades or renovations related to electrical systems.
  • Oversees, in conjunction with the Assistant General Manager, the daily operation and maintenance of the facilities and all systems.
  • This includes HVAC, sound, lighting, fire protection, life safety, workplace safety, communications, video boards, ice plant, etc.
  • Assists in the administration of Set up (in house) and other labor groups, including IATSE.
  • Oversees the operation of event set-up and tear-down, i.e. stage risers, chairs, signs, hockey glass, dasher boards, etc.
  • Schedules, trains and oversees the operations managers, changeover supervisors, building mechanics, building services staff, etc.
  • Oversees the ordering of supplies and materials for building supplies and maintenance within budget guidelines.
  • Responsible for Health & Safety compliance for both the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena.
  • Represents Operations Department or assigns representation as needed by the Assistant General Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by Assistant General Manager.

 

Qualifications

  • College or Technical degree or 6+ years of work experience required.
  • Must show demonstrated knowledge of physical plant management, supervisory skills and experience in work crew supervision in facility operations.
  • Capable of working a flexible schedule and extended hours including but not limited to working early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays in addition to traditional business hours.
  • Familiarity of OSHA requirements.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid drivers’ license.
  • Employee must occasionally lift or move up to 75 Pounds.
  • Employee must have the capability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • High level of proficiency in Windows environment with extensive experience in Microsoft applications, especially Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be accurate and efficient with the ability to meet strict deadlines as well prioritize accordingly.
  • Ability to work with all levels of management and in teams, including leadership.
