Position Summary

The Chief Engineer inspects facilities and equipment to determine need and extent of service, equipment required, and type and number of operation and maintenance personnel needed to perform such duties.

 

This role pays an hourly wage of $77.65 to $80.03

 

Benefits as per the union agreement.

 

This position will remain open until June 6, 2025. 

About the Venue

The Santa Clara Convention Center is proudly owned by The City of Santa Clara and managed by Oak View Group. We are strategically located in the heart of Silicon Valley, a prime location for conventions, trade shows and exhibitions. The Santa Clara Convention Center is minutes from hotels, restaurants, Levi’s Stadium, California’s Great America Theme Park, and many of the largest and most influential technology companies in the world, with easy access to freeways and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport and only 45 miles south of San Francisco. The Convention Center features 100,000 square feet of exhibit space, a 22,400 square foot ballroom, 31 breakout rooms and a 607-seat theater and attracts over 350,000 visitors annually. The facility is an integral economic component of Santa Clara, generating economic benefits through attendee direct and indirect spending and sustaining over 500 local jobs.

Responsibilities

  • The Chief Engineer shall create and maintain a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance Program for the entire building, keeping all records of such maintenance to be available for review when requested.
  • Assigns workers to duties such as maintenance, repair, or renovation and obtains bids for additional work from outside contractors.
  • Directs contracted projects to verify adherence to specifications.
  • Purchases building and maintenance supplies, machinery, equipment, and furniture under the Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Budget.
  • Maintains inventory of essential spare parts and equipment.
  • Plans and administers building department budget including CIP.
  • Compile records of labor and material cost for operating building and issues cost reports to the Facilities Manager.
  • Prepares construction specifications or plans, obtaining advice from engineering consultants.
  • Assembles and analyzes contract bids and shall submit bids and recommendations to superiors for approval/action.
  • Oversee setup and removal electrical power equipment such as extensions for clients and catering except that which is contracted to others by client.
  • Maintain building, performing minor and routine sheetrock replacement and painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical wiring, and other related maintenance activities.
  • The Chief Engineer shall notify management concerning any need for major repairs or additions to lighting, plumbing, heating and ventilating equipment or general construction of the building including but not limited to floors, ceilings, roof, walls exits or egresses.
  • Assist A/V Technicians as required.
  • Along with The Facilities Manager, The Chief Engineer serves as the Center’s representative on major, City directed projects at the Center.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Chief Engineer shall train, plan, assign and direct work to five employees in the Engineering Department.
  • The Chief Engineer is responsible for notifying the Facilities Manager of any complaints or issues which may involve the stationary engineers to ensure that appropriate actions are taken.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

WORK SCHEDULE:

Ability to work various workdays and hours to meet business needs including early/late hours, long days, weekends and holidays.  In addition, must be able to come in to work if called for emergency at any time.

 

Must be reliable and punctual.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS :                      

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and article for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to speak effectively to customers, clients, and employees of the organization including management, and public groups. 

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATIONS:

Forklift, Aerial Platform Lift and valid California Drivers License

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, ladder, Forklift and scissor lift, etc.

Ability to work in a fast paced environment to meet deadlines.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or control.  The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and ability to adjust focus.
