Position Summary

The Chief Engineer uses independent judgment, assuming management responsibilities for strategy, planning, organizing, development, implementation and compliance of services and activities involved in the maintenance and operation in the areas of engineering, electrical systems, HVAC, mechanical maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, and ice management on the interior and exterior areas of the PPL Center. Maximize equipment utility, quality of work, compliance and profitability, while monitoring financial / budget performance expectations and assets. Position will independently direct the operations and performance of the Engineering and maintenance staff, along with prioritizing and facilitating plans & projects throughout the PPL Center and Restaurants. Will work closely with representatives from Allentown Arena Condominium Owners Association to ensure that the CUP (Central Utility Plant), shared/common areas and management of the Building Automation Systems standards are met for all tenants within the Condo Association.

 

This role will pay a yearly salary of $70,000 to $80,000.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:         

  • Assume management responsibility for all services and activities involved in the maintenance and operations of the PPL Center including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, chillers, refrigeration, ice making, boilers and associated equipment.
  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for facility maintenance and operations; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Participate in the development and administration of the Operation budget; forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments as necessary.
  • Oversee the central utility plant operation; coordinate facility arrangements with concessionaires and vendors; direct and monitor the work of contractors, engineers, and architects on building projects.
  • Order supplies and materials for maintenance programs within budget guidelines; receive and maintain supplies.
  • Communicate and coordinate all aspects of the Central Utility plant, shared and common elements with the Allentown Arena Condominium Owners Association in accordance with the Condo Association.
  • Maintain hazardous materials communication program, material safety date sheets and required records and permits; maintain knowledge of changes in pertinent Federal, State and Local regulations.
  • Develop and maintain an accurate record keeping system.
  • Able to perform general handyman jobs including but not limited to ( carpentry, electrical, plumbing, minor construction)

In      Intellectual/Social Demands:

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will constantly be in leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in prescribed time frame.  This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, being able to recognize and resolve conflicts, being able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients. 

 

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the essential functions of the job, employee is frequently required to stand, walk, crouch; and sit for long periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds, work in high places on ladders and motorized lift equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; constantly communicates with staff, vendors and other to exchange accurate information.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4-5 years management experience in general maintenance & repair of HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and related building systems, and knowledge of Ice refrigeration.
  • College degree and/or specialized training in the building maintenance of HVAC or related building systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA requirements.
  • Possession of an electrical license is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of boilers, chillers, refrigeration and ice making helpful.
  • Willingness and desire to work nights, weekends and holidays as required
  • Needs to have general handyman skills
  • Proficient computer user along with MS Word, Excel and Outlook, internet-based programs, use of a tablet and typing skills
  • Excellent organizational / project management skills. Ability effectively lead & motivate a large team.
  • Must be comfortable multi-tasking and changing priorities in a fast-paced, event-driven environment
