Position Summary

The Director of Marketing is responsible for marketing of the XL Center, Pratt & Whitney Stadium, and its events including the Hartford Wolf Pack. Not only will the Director of Marketing take a lead role in the advertising/media buying, promotions, public relations, and grassroots efforts for the venues and its events but will orchestrate the execution of strategy and tactics that amplify our brand. This proactive business leader will also be responsible for aggregating, analyzing, and segmenting key data points that maximize the return on investment of our brand including web, customer service, and social media. This position will inspire and foster communications between business development, marketing, public relations, sales, and others to facilitate the strategic growth of Oak View Group within our two buildings.

 

This role will pay a salary of $75,000 - $90,000/year  plus bonus

About the Venue

The XL Center is Connecticut’s premier destination for sports & entertainment.
The 15,000+ seat downtown arena is home to the eleventh-time National Champion UConn Women's Basketball team and the six-time National Champion UConn Men's Basketball team. Led by Hall of Fame basketball Head Coach Geno Auriemma and Dan Hurley, the Men's & Women's basketball programs have established themselves as national powerhouses.

 

The XL Center is also home to the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, the primary developmental affiliate of the New York Rangers.

 

The XL Center entertains millions of visitors annually with a variety of concerts, family shows, ice-skating spectaculars, consumer events, and trade shows throughout the season. The venue has played host to an extraordinary roster of world-renowned artists, including Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pearl Jam, Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears, Drake, and many others.

 

The XL Center will continue to be the center of sports and entertainment for Hartford and the State of Connecticut for years to come.

Responsibilities

  • Provide marketing support for concerts, family shows, Hartford Wolf Pack, sporting events & other events
  • Plan and oversee XL Center, Pratt & Whitney Stadium, and the Hartford Wolf Pack’s marketing, advertising, and promotion plans including traditional media, grassroots, and digital
  • Identify, develop, and evaluate marketing strategy, based on knowledge of established objectives and market characteristics
  • Enhance existing promotional initiatives and develop innovative marketing programs to maximize ROI such as third-party partnerships, new media avenues, etc.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of annual marketing goals, objectives, and management of department budget with strong attention to time, quality, and impact
  • Direct the hiring and training of venue marketing staff members and oversee their daily activities in accordance with company policy and addressing complaints and resolving problems as needed
  • Create, plan, and implement repeatable revenue generating events, innovative marketing programs, concepts, and processes
  • Responsible for measuring, reporting, and achieving performance against agreed upon service levels and ROIs
  • Create collateral materials such as in venue digital assets, ads, promotional pieces, schedules, and various brochures from concept to completion
  • Research, analyze, and monitor industry trends so that market opportunities may be capitalized on, and the effects of competitive activity may be minimized
  • Maximize sponsorship opportunities to increase brand awareness and synergies
  • Create social media and email campaigns to engage customers, vendors, sponsors, and community, collect data and generate awareness
  • Work with Hartford Wolf Pack leadership to develop, implement, and achieve marketing goals and objectives
  • Provide thought leadership, data analysis, and strategic focus to our marketing communications, customer experience strategies, and brand management
  • Leverage strong research and analytical skills to analyze data and inform management on key perceptions and trends to drive strong decision making
  • Update content on website and direct web development company on site features, design, and goals focusing on UX
  • Responsible for the coordination of marketing between promoters, artist management, and local media including guiding and assisting media buying and marketing of events
  • Responsible for compilation of all event settlement information including oversite of annual marketing budget
  • Track, analyze and compare event sales information, sales by city reports, and the weekly sales report
  • Responsible for the creation of the Annual report and annual Marketing and Communications plans
  • Serve as press contact, write, and distribute all press releases such as media releases, story pitches, media drops, interviews, etc.
  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with contacts and coworkers
  • Work directly with other departments to implement campaigns including the Hartford Wolf Pack, Corporate Sales, Group Sales & Food Services
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in marketing, public relations, business administration, or another related field
  • 5-7 years of increasingly responsible experience in marketing, preferably with an arena, sports team, stadium, convention center, performing arts facility or other multi-purpose public assembly facility
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, Ticketmaster, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of marketing, advertising/sponsorship programs, and Public Relations
  • Excellent, concise verbal and written communication skills in the English language, both orally and in writing
  • Must be able to project a professional manner and appearance, and communicate effectively with clients, senior management, staff, and the general public
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and an internal motivation that inspires others to think more and do more
  • A results-driven leader who thinks in terms of ROI with increasing per caps and generating profitability
  • Flexible skill set that can be applied across a variety of relationships/situations with a track record of success
  • Familiarity with the latest trends, technologies and methodologies in graphic design, web design, production, etc.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, days, evenings, holidays, extended (long) workdays for an extended number of days, as needed
