Position Summary

As a stagehand at Rhode Island Convention Center (RICC) and Amica Mutual Pavilion (AMP), you will play a crucial role in the setup, operation, and dismantling of stage equipment and props for live events, performances, concerts, and conventions and meetings. Stagehands will work to ensure seamless execution of stage setups and transitions during events.

Stagehands are union positions and rates of pay are dictated by position and the collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 23. Positions under the CBA include:

Stagehand, Rigging, Truck Loading/Unloading, Audio/Video Production, Department Head and Steward.

About the Venue

The Rhode Island Convention Center (RICC) is located in the heart of Providence’s downtown. The RICC features 100,000 square feet of flexible exhibit space and an additional 67,000 square feet of ballroom, breakout and meeting spaces. Capable of hosting trade shows, consumer shows, exhibits, receptions, banquets, meetings, tournaments and competitions, and, of course, conventions, event planners will enjoy a collaborative partnership with our knowledgeable and professional staff. The RICC is connected to the Amica Mutual Pavilion and the 564-room Omni Providence Hotel, and in turn, Providence Place, a downtown shopping destination filled with big-name retailers and an assortment of dining and entertainment options. Known to locals as "The AMP PVD," the 14,000-seat Amica Mutual Pavilion (formerly the Dunkin' Donuts Center) is home to the AHL Providence Bruins and the Big East Providence College Friars. The arena hosts sporting events, major concerts, family shows and trade shows.

Responsibilities

  • The putting-in and putting-out, loading and unloading, installation, assembly, operation, and repair of all equipment and decorations used in the presentation of all theatrical, musical and/or other productions which take place at the RICC/AMP, including theatrical and other lighting, traveling stages, boxing rings, wrestling rings, scenery, drapes, curtains, banners, travelers, lights and spotlighting, screens, projectors, video cameras, sound equipment, switchboards, and required rigging, along with the assembling, building, constructing or repair of theatrical scenery, sets and/or equipment which are brought into the building and required for such theatrical and musical productions or events at the RICC/AMP;
  • The operation, maintenance and repair of all sound, video and spotlighting equipment used in connection with any theatrical, musical, sports and/or other event taking place at the RICC/AMP, and the operation of all lighting switchboards in connection with theatrical, musical, and/or events taking place;
  • All rigging required in connection with theatrical musical and/or other event taking place at the RICC/AMP, as well as the hanging of banners and signs from the RICC/AMP beams or ceiling, unless the rigging is operated by employees employed by a circus. Rigging, as used herein, is defined as the use of chain motors, chain falls and block and tackles and aerial work platforms ground-supported, hand-cranked lifting devices used to lift trusses and/or other equipment that exceeds 150 lbs. in weight to be used in connection with a theatrical, musical, sports and/or other event, as well as regularly scheduled maintenance of fall arrest and other "work at height" safety gear;
  • All electronics and wiring for televised sporting and other events taking place at the RICC/AMP;
  • For the basketball games, the assembly of the scorers' table with "Dorna" (scrolling sign) and any electronic and sound equipment associated therewith;
  • The putting-in and putting-out, loading and unloading, installation, operation or repair of all equipment used in the production of motion pictures or sound or video recordings on tape or on film of any event being produced at the RICC/AMP Amica Mutual Pavilion excepting, however, the operation of the television broadcast cameras and remote transmitting facilities associated with Providence College Friars, or any other televised NCAA or professional basketball games;
  • The installation and tear down of all projectors, screens, whether for slides, motion pictures, closed circuit television or any other purpose, and the installation and tearing down of all equipment used for the televising of any event taking place at the RICC/AMP Amica Mutual Pavilion;
  • Operation of all facility owned, leased or rented video production and camera equipment within the RICC/AMP Amica Mutual Pavilion; and
  • Other duties covered in the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or general education degree (GED); trade school or some college
2 or more years of related experience in show production and/or live entertainment
Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills and Abilities

Ability to work with minimal supervision
General knowledge of theatrical carpentry, lighting, sound, video, and basic rigging skills
Strong problem-solving skills required
Ability to prioritize and to handle multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to work well under limited time restrictions
Good written, verbal and interpersonal skills required; ability to interact with all levels of staff including management
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to read and comprehend instruction labeling
Ability to work irregular hours including, night shifts, weekends and holidays
Professional presentation, appearance and work ethic

Physical Requirements

Ability and comfort to climb and work from lifts, ladders and catwalks for long periods of time multiple times per day.

Regular movement around the facility; to stand for long hours during events; talk and hear; use hands and fingers to use equipment; perform duties above ground (lift); perform work around the public/large groups of people.

Various positions require reaching with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, lift/move heavy objects up to 100-150 pounds.
